2 Major Industrial Wastewater Treatment Technologies Used Today

Some basic industrial wastewater treatment technologies are used to provide environmental protection, cost-effective sanitation and the ability to recycle and use of water. These treatments often use aquatic and terrestrial systems and are mostly popular in South America and Caribbean regions. Let’s explore some of the major wastewater treatment technologies which employ some techniques and systems to for different purposes.

Mechanical Treatment Technologies
Mechanical systems use a combination of biological, chemical and physical or simply natural processes in an artificially constructed environment. These systems use a number of mechanical components including screens, grinders, blowers, pumps, and others to treat wastewaters. Different types of instruments control the rate and flow of wastewater. An activated-sludge process which is a suspended-growth system has a number of variations such as extended aeration systems, oxidation ditches, and sequencing batch reactors (SBR). Whereas a trickling filter solids contact process (TF-SCP) is an attached-growth system. Both the systems can be used at their best where land area is in excess.

Aquatic Treatment Technologies
Facultative lagoons—a type of stabilization pond, is one of the most common form of aquatic technology used today. The upper surface of the water is aerobic, while the bottom layer is anaerobic which consists sludge deposits. The intermediate layer is the facultative portion which is aerobic from the upper layer and anaerobic from the bottom one. Aerated lagoons are deeper and smaller as compared to facultative lagoons.

Aquatic technologies employ sand filters, aquaculture operations and constructed wetlands as the most preferred methods used to remove effluents from the treated lagoons. These systems have also been used with more traditional treatment technologies including septic tanks, primary clarifiers, etc.

Sand filters normally come in two types: recirculating and intermittent. The main difference between the two occurs in type of wastewater application. Recirculating filters apply a pump to recirculate effluents to the filter as per the ratio of 3 to 5 parts effluent to 1 part of raw wastewater.
